Natural Helpers
Peers helping peers.
During the 2004-2005 school year, more than 100 new Natural Helpers completed the retreat training and an
additional 50 helpers who had been trained in previous years continued to be active in the program.
Participants reported helping their peers with nearly 800 problems. The most commonly reported problem was
friend relationship. Other problems identified include romantic relationships, academic pressure, family
relationships, stress and sports-related problems.
By the end of the school year, over 85% of helpers demonstrated improved skills taught at the retreat.

Serious, life threatening problems identified by the helpers include alcohol and drug abuse, physical
abuse/violence, suicide, and sexual abuse. Although identified less frequently, helpers are trained
to deal with these issues and refer their peers to professionals and/or trusted adults.
