Y.E.S. program for elementary students
receives commendation

Recovery and Prevention Resources of Delaware and Morrow Counties (RPR) has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) for a prevention program serving elementary school students.

The agency's Y.E.S. program (You're Extra Special) has been named an Exemplary Prevention Program for State Fiscal Year 2008 and was one of only two programs statewide to receive the award.

Y.E.S. provides in-school support and counseling for children ages five to 13 who live in homes where alcohol or other drug abuse is a problem. RPR provides the program in 14 different school groups in both Delaware and Morrow counties.

Children participate in Y.E.S. sessions one day each week for a 12 week program. Students generally are identified by teachers or guidance counselors for participation in the program, and many participate for more than one year. The sessions use age-appropriate activities to provide education that addresses feelings, anger and anger management, defenses, alcohol and other drug use, family issues, problem solving, identifying safe places and safe adults, self-esteem and the importance of play.

“This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our substance abuse prevention staff,” said Tony Williams, LICDC, chief executive officer of RPR. “It is an honor that this highly successful program has been recognized for the important role it serves with children at risk in our service area.” According to Williams, RPR is the only provider of substance abuse prevention in the two counties.

“In a world filled with countless challenges and temptations, it is essential that Ohio's local and state networks offer support for our young people and guide them towards drug and violence-free lifestyles,” said Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Director Angela Cornelius. “This year's exemplary award winners have been invaluable advocates of ODADAS' vision of an addiction-free Ohio that promotes health, safety and economic opportunity. Their contributions certainly do not go unnoticed.”

A recognition ceremony was held in Columbus on December 12 at the annual Ohio Prevention and Education Conference. Janet Chandler, associate director of RPR, accepted the award on behalf of the agency. The recognition was given after ODADAS reviewed the program application and letters of recommendation, conducted interviews with school and RPR officials and participated in on-site visits at local schools.

RPR offers a broad array of evidence-based outpatient treatment services for families, children, teens and adults in Delaware and Morrow counties. These services include assessments and diagnostic evaluations; individual, group and family counseling; crisis intervention; case management; and intensive outpatient programs, among others – all provided by licensed therapists, counselors, and social workers.

RPR, a community-based not-for-profit agency, has served children, adolescents, adults and families in Delaware and Morrow counties for more than 37 years. Committed to the prevention, intervention and treatment of alcohol and other drug abuse, RPR offers a wide range of research-based programs that are built on learning, practicing and supporting healthy life choices.
