Ohio Tobacco QUIT LINE
receives more than 38,000 calls in 2007
Morrow County Residents Benefit from Free Telephone Counseling Service
Recovery & Prevention Resources (RPR) is pleased to
be working with the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation (OTPF) to promote
the Ohio Tobacco QUIT LINE to the citizens of Morrow County. A report
from the Foundation indicates that 61 Morrow County residents have
called the QUIT LINE from January through October.
According to Belinda Webb, RPR Prevention/Education Coordinator, “We are
pleased to see Morrow County citizens taking this important step in the
quitting process. Morrow County continues to have a smoking rate that is
higher than the state and national average and RPR is working hard to
educate our citizens about the importance of making healthy choices,
including quitting tobacco.”
The QUIT LINE has helped more than 130,000 callers from each of Ohio's
88 counties since its inception in August 2003, and statistics show that
tobacco users utilizing the Ohio Tobacco QUIT LINE are five times more
likely to be successful than tobacco users trying to quit “cold turkey”
on their own.
In fact, OTPF recently announced its greatest milestone to date: more
than 25,000 Ohioans have quit tobacco by utilizing Ohio Tobacco QUIT
LINE's telephone coaching services.
The Ohio Tobacco QUIT LINE,
1-800-QUITNOW, is a free telephone
counseling service that connects people who want to quit using tobacco
with trained counselors who can guide and support them through the
quitting process. Callers to the QUIT LINE work with a quit specialist
to develop an individualized quitting plan, set a quit date and change
behaviors associated with tobacco use. Callers to the QUIT LINE may also
be eligible for free or reduced-cost nicotine replacement patches
through employer and health plan partnerships. In addition, more than
one million adult Ohioans without any type of health insurance can now
qualify for reduced-cost nicotine patches (4 weeks at a cost of only
$25) in combination with the highly effective telephone cessation
services to aid in ending tobacco addiction.
RPR has received funding since FY 2004 from the Ohio Tobacco Prevention
Foundation (OTPF) as part of a statewide grassroots program. The focus
areas for the 2007 grant (the Tobacco Free Tomorrow project) include:
youth smoking prevention, reducing exposure to second hand smoke,
smoking cessation and building community awareness and support. To learn
