Common Obstacles to Recovery
Ignoring The Facts
— Not understanding or believing the facts about chemical dependency and the
effect it can have on you
Denial
— The unwillingness to admit to yourself the extent of your usage or the problems it is causing
Shame
— The feeling of isolation and fear that prevents you from seeking the help that you need
Peer Groups
— As others who care about you become more concerned, you find yourself spending more
time with those who "understand" you and encourage your substance abuse
Emotional Loss of Control
— You take out your own feelings of anger and isolation on family,
friends, and co-workers
Enablers/Codependents
— Others who try to help you by cleaning up your messes (legal, home, work,
physical). Although well intentioned, they keep you from understanding the full extent of your problem.
Personal Exception
— Believing that you are "not like all those other people" and that
your case is special and different
