Prescription Drugs

The inappropriate or non-medical use of prescription drugs is a serious public health concern. Especially when not taken as directed, prescription medications can become addictive.

Three of the most commonly abused medications are opioids, used to treat pain, depressants, used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders, and stimulants, which are prescribed to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Young people frequently abuse prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, typically obtained from peers, friends, or family members.

Since these drugs are legal medications and easily obtained, many consider their use to be a less risky. When consumed like candy or mixed with other drugs or alcohol, this can be very dangerous, and in some cases even fatal.
