Tobacco

Nicotine is one of the main ingredients in tobacco. It is a powerful central nervous system stimulant and is classified as a drug. Nicotine is so addictive that many people continue to smoke even when their lives are in danger from the use of tobacco.

Tobacco leaves can be burned and inhaled (in the form of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or smoke) or absorbed through the mouth (in the form of smokeless tobacco, spit, chew, or snuff).

The adverse health effects from cigarette smoking account for 440,000 deaths, or nearly 1 of every 5 deaths, each year in the United States. More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.
